Chapter 16

In the wake of her conversation with Warden Robichaud, the calculated risk Remy had taken to make it happen might have been underestimated. He had seemed a reasonable man, but when confronted with the situation, he slithered around the problem worse than any snake. He slithered like a politician. And the end result could find Remy under the microscope. That was the last place she wanted to be.

Cain had warned her, but in the end, he stood by her side. What would happen next depended upon how much Robichaud feared Remy’s retribution. It hadn’t seemed he feared her much. Maybe he would do the right thing, maybe not, but if not, then this wasn’t over for her.

Now, in the light of a new day, she didn’t regret the visit. After all, ASAC Hubert had made the suggestion, not that she would ever point a finger. But a part of her felt protected by that suggestion as though, if it came down to it, he would have her back.

Remy arrived at the FAU office to find Grayson standing at her desk. “Why is it you’re always here before me?”

“What can I say, Fontaine? I’m an early riser.”

Her brow knitted. “It’s seven a.m.”

“Maybe you’ll beat me next time.” He patted her back. “We have a busy day ahead of us. Are you ready to check out the other two marinas?”

“Yeah, give me two minutes.” She set down her bag. “Do we know if the truck has been sighted?”

“I told them to keep me on notice. Nothing yet. Oh, and whatever money these guys managed to get away with? Not a single dime of it has been spent. Or if it has, it’s been cleaned by a pro.”

“Why go through the trouble for such a small amount of cash? Seems like an unnecessary step to me. Although, I suppose they were extra careful up until the shooting.” Remy considered a solution. “I have some names I can check into and ask around about it.”

“By all means, go for it.” Grayson turned on his heel. “Wheels up in five.”

She logged into her computer and pulled up some old contacts from her trooper days. If money was getting washed, she knew who to call. Whether they knew of people who took care of small amounts of cash, she didn’t know, but it was a place to start.

“Early morning again, Remy?” Kevin arrived at his desk.

“I could say the same about you,” she replied. “How you doing this morning, Kevin?”

“Hanging in. You?”

“Same. Hoping to make some progress today, though.”

“Fingers crossed. Looks like I have a solid lead on the escaped con. Heading out with Valencic in the Criminal Division in a few minutes to check it out.”

“That’s great news. Valencic’s a good guy. Good luck.”

“Back at you.”

Remy returned to her task and jotted down the names and numbers. The cost to launder such a small amount of cash would hardly be worth it as far as she was concerned. Those guys took a hefty commission. Still, the robbers were smarter than she gave them credit for.
